Kerbal space program workshop11/21/2023 ![]() Thermal ChallengesIn Kerbal Space Program 2, we try to introduce prospective rocketeers to the edges of various space disciplines. It is rather long, but it is a complex topic worthy of discussion, and the community deserves a good analysis of what we’re doing, where the core challenges are, and where we are making specific design choices for interesting gameplay. In this dev blog I’m going to go into the design of the thermal systems in KSP2. ![]() ![]() One gameplay system that we have heard a lot of enthusiasm for is thermodynamics, and thermodynamics is very dear to my heart. As KSP1’s modding community proves, there are thousands of possible features, and dozens of possible approaches to each feature. Different community members have varied perspectives on what features we should add or improve next. Pulling off a successful space mission is really a massively interdisciplinary undertaking. Propulsion – obviously without engines you’re getting nowhere! Mission analysis? Where will you go without an actual mission? How are you steering your rocket without guidance, navigation, and control? Electrical and life support – obviously key. In aerospace, a recurring joke is that every discipline considers their part of the project the most critical to mission success. I want this game to be as good as it wants to be, but given the devs interaction with the community and the snail's pace at which patches are released, I don't think this game will truly ever be what it promised. Not long ago, the most recent reviews of KSP 2 are mostly negative, and I am willing to bet that will transfer to all reviews as well. Guess what, you aren't getting downvoted because of bots, you're getting downvoted because the game sucks colossal garbage. Additionally, the Community Managers thinks that bots are downvoting their comments on Reddit. Not long ago, when Threads started, Private Division posted a message stating that they can't wait for another platform where players can ask when the next patch is coming. And don't get me started on the way the devs speak of their community. The game's most prevalent bug, wobbly rockets, is still in the game and ruining missions, and what to the devs have to say to this? "We're rethinking how we think of wobbly rockets." What is there to think about wobbly rockets! On day 1 of the game, people found a way to go into the games code and increase joint rigidity, which fixed the wobbly rocket problem, and 6 months later the devs still haven't implemented a short-term solution, such as autostrut. ![]() 6 months after launch, this game is still in a sorry state and I don't think it will ever truly recover. And devs have confirmed that this patch will include no new content and only bug fixes. At the time of this review, August 13th, there have been a total of 2 hotfixes fixing a total of like, 3 bugs, and patch 4 is slated for near the end of this month, another 2 months after patch 3. This patch fixed a few bugs and added a few new parts, one of which, the airbrakes, was bugged. Then Patch 3 rolled around, not one, but over 2 months after patch 2. A little less than a month later, patch 2 released, which fixed even more bugs, and although I thought this patch was a little late, it was still a step forward in the right direction. Then patch 1 released, fixing 290 bugs, including the trajectories bug which had made fuel-efficient missions impossible. I used to have hope in this game when it was released, and for the first few weeks was able to look past the bugs. Instagram Īlthough KSP 2 is a sequel, oftentimes, this game feels worse than its predecessor. Keep up with all things Kerbal Space Program □ Thank you all for joining us on this Early Access journey! □ We're working hard to make KSP2 the best it can be. As the song goes, □ things can only get better □. Ask away questions about parts and part systems below.Īs a final note, we understand that KSP2's current state doesn't meet fan expectations. ![]() In addition, we'll be hosting a live AMA on Twitch [with Senior Mechanical Concept Designer Chris Adderley (aka Nertea, former KSP1 modder) next week on August 17th at 10am PT / 1pm ET / 6pm BST. We'd also like to share that in the weeks to come, you can expect to see three developer interview videos with three different members of the team, diving deep into: This patch continues our commitment to resolving the biggest issues faced by our community to set up a solid foundation in preparation for the Science update. Patch v0.1.4.0 is currently scheduled to go live August 22nd. ![]()
